Year 8 Art Extension Trip to Art Gallery & Library on Wednesday 17 June 2026
We are excited to be taking a group of our Year 8 students on a special visit to the Tauranga Art Gallery and Tauranga Library. As part of a Year 8 extension project, students will be creating a collaborative ceramic tile artwork that will remain here at Taumata School as a lasting legacy piece for future students and whānau to enjoy. Students will be split into two groups and will rotate between sessions at the Tauranga Art Gallery and Tauranga Library throughout the day.
At the Art Gallery, students will take part in a classroom session linked to the work of local ceramic artist Jaime Jenkins, whose exhibition is currently on display. Students will create their own clay tile during the session to practice techniques and skills that will support the collaborative ceramic artwork they will create back at school. At the Library, students will take part in a session called Te Papa o Ngā Waka. Tamariki will go on a journey of discovery to learn about the special connection between a waka and our city library. Through tactile, hands-on activities and exploration of the He Puna Manawa library space, students will learn about the different parts of a waka and the stories and meanings connected to them. The session focuses on the values of teamwork, curiosity, and recollection.
Both experiences connect directly to the students’ legacy art project at school. The Art Gallery session will help students develop practical ceramic and creative skills, while the Library session will encourage students to think more deeply about identity, storytelling, connection, and how collective pieces can represent people, place, and shared journeys. Together, these experiences will help inspire the final collaborative artwork that students will leave behind at Taumata School.
